Getting Support From Justin

With Windows 7 coming and a bunch of minor issues with various people's computers it occurred to me that I better gear up to do some support. We are going to use a service built into every windows computer since XP, remote assistance.

If you have ever felt like smashing your computer, getting remote assistance up and running should help. The service allows a remote technician, in this case me, to see and control your computer. It is an invitation/acceptance service and is thus quite safe.

The basic steps are:
  1. Agree on a password with Justin (by phone)
  2. Create and save a support ticket
  3. Send the support ticket (as an attachment) to me

The password needs to be agreed upon, and for security reasons this is better done over the phone, so give me a call. I won't post a phone number here, because there are web callers that pick up numbers and add you to various companies call lists. Also friends and family should have my phone number, if not you can email me and I will send it along to you.

Create Support Ticket Advanced Version

This version has no pictures and is not OS specific, it is appropriate if you already know pretty much what you are doing

  1. In your start menu click on Help and Support
  2. Click on Invite a Friend to Connect to Your Computer
  3. Click on Invite someone to help you
  4. Click on Send invitation as a file
  5. Enter your name
  6. Leave the standard duration
  7. Continue
  8. Enter the prearranged password
  9. Save invitation (to somewhere you can find it)
  10. Create an email to me and attach the support file

Create Support Ticket In XP, The Step By Step Method With Pictures

These first steps create a directory for saving the ticket in, if you have done this once before you don't need to repeat it and can skip to step 4. Or if you have your own way to create a directory feel free to create c:\justin\support and skip to step 4.

1. Press the windows key

2. Select Run

3. Select cmd

3. Type

Now you have created the directory.

4. Select Help and Support

5. Click on Invite Friend To Support

Select Invite Someone to Support You

Select Save Invitation as file (it is the last option below email)

Fill out your name and leave the standard duration

Then fill out the pre-arranged password and hit save invitation

Select the directory we created (or create c:\justin\support now)

Now take the file and send it as an email attachment
